A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Eliana Haig began playing the viola when she was 8 years old and enjoys a diverse career as a performer and educator. Eliana currently serves as a section violist in the Binghamton Philharmonic and as a substitute for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. A few of her favorite musical experiences include being coached by Grammy Award-winning composer Joan Tower, playing Bach on a baroque viola for the Rochester Early Music Festival, and taking a semester-long course in improvisation while studying at the Eastman School of Music. In 2005, Eliana’s pursuits took her to Austria, where she studied music and German at the University for Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz.
Eliana has spent summers performing in the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute, and the National Repertory Orchestra, where she worked with members of the Cleveland Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and National Symphony. An avid chamber musician, she has been coached by the Orion, Enso, Daedalus, and Fine Arts quartets and the Amelia Piano Trio.
With over 7 years of experience teaching students of various ages and levels, Eliana has taught at the Amadeus Conservatory of Music in Chappaqua, NY, RCSD School 17 in Rochester, and Appleton, Wisconsin’s “String Project” sponsored by the American String Teacher’s Association. Eliana returns to Rochester having recently completed an Artist Diploma at SUNY Purchase. She holds a Master of Music in Performance from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Lawrence University. Her principal teachers include Ira Weller, George Taylor, and Matthew Michelic.
